arty's first birthday party

arty's first birthday was a perfect sunny sunday. we spent the afternoon in the back yard with delicious treats, a paddling pool, face painting, bubbles, and many beloved people.

too busy posing to blow out the candle

"cake! where have you been all my life? you guys have been holding out on me!"

fruit sticks - perfect for babies, kids, and grownups alike

very proud of my little fondant leaves, lady bugs and bees

baby soup

 party bags for all!

arty clapped enthusiastically when every one sang "happy birthday" and thoroughly enjoyed all the hugs and attention he received. we were worried he might get overwhelmed by it all, but he enjoyed every second. i think we might have an extrovert on our hands here!

we'll look back on his first birthday as a very happy one. here's to many, many more like it.

dear arthur: 1 year

my dear, dear little boy,

you are now one whole year old. i am so proud of you, and your mummy, and myself, for how far we've come together since the 20th of january last year.

you've done so much changing and learning in your first year with us, but oh, what a teacher you have been.

you have taught me how strong i can be.
and how easy i am to break.

you've taught me to be more patient, more loving, more mindful.

i've learned the true meaning of exhaustion, and of elation.
and that they often go together.

i've learned what it feels like to have someone else's vomit down my top, and someone else's shit in my hair, and how few fucks i give about that when you're sick, or sad, or you need me.

i've come to know just how much i want to be for you - braver, wiser, gentler, and more constant than i've ever known how to be before.

you make me want to be my best self every day.
and i will keep learning and trying, while you continue to show me, little teacher.

i love you,
mama x

baby noms: purple porridge

arty is quite partial to foods that are creamy, so he's only too happy to eat any and all forms of porridge. he also loves berries, so i thought i'd combine the two. the result was purple porridge!

purple porridge

1/3 cup oats
2/3 cup milk
1/3 cup blueberries (frozen or fresh)
1 tbsp shredded coconut
1/4 tsp vanilla extract

  • place all ingredients in a small saucepan, and simmer over a low heat until it becomes a nice creamy porridge.
  • serve immediately, but take care as the blueberries will retain heat, and could burn your baby's mouth if not allowed to cool properly.

how things change

one of the most viewed pictures in my flickr photostream is this one, from 2008. it shows the contents of my handbag, and it's a pretty good insight into where i was in my life at that stage - a young professional, studying part time.

rescue remedy, stress management multivitamin, uni notes, molskine notebook and sketchbook
water bottle, lipsticks, chanel mademoiselle perfume, iphone, ipod, pencil case, fountain pen, filofax
powder, plush, soft makeup brush, handmade silk glasses case, a paperback, violet flavoured lollies, pawpaw for lips, wallet.

i thought i'd do the same thing with my current handbag as an illustration of how much has changed since then.

wallet, baby neurofen, notebook with handmade cover, wet wipes for sticky fingers and faces, baby sunscreen
ray ban aviators, keys, 2b pencil, usb in shape of r2d2, tin of baby-friendly snacks (dried fruit, biscotti, etc), mascara, lip salve, bb cream, make up case by cath kidston
iphone, large custom coloured reusable keep cup, neurofen plus, baby spoon, various rattling toys.

i've certainly, err... "streamlined" my beauty routine, and i don't wear perfume any more because arty doesn't like it. audiobooks are how i read at the moment, because i don't have as much time to sit down and get absorbed in a book. i go out walking a lot more these days, so good sunglasses, and some kind of vessel for caffiene are essential.

i still like handmade stuff. i still love apple products. i will never be the kind of person who feels ok leaving the house without something to write with and on.

i'm still me. just different.

baby noms: summer fruit puree

we're enjoying some beautiful berries and stonefruit at the moment, so i thought i'd do a variation on our staple appleberry puree.

it smells delicious as it simmers on the stove

summer fruit puree

1 punnet blackberries
1 cup strawberries, hulled and chopped
1 large apple, peeled, cored, and chopped
2 peaches, peeled, stoned, and chopped
2 or 3 tablespoons of water

  • place all ingredients in a small saucepan and cook, covered, over low heat until tender
  • puree and pour into ice trays
  • store in freezer for up to three months

arty's been enjoying this on his weet bix in the morning, in porridge, with yoghurt, and even with some vanilla custard for a treat.
